Flotilla Activities

The preceding news article was published in The Courier News, "Your Town News" Section on May 30th, 2006.

The Dunellen Flotilla was asked to participate in a Memorial Day celebration held at the Stony Brook School with the entire student body in attendance along with dignitaries from the county and municipalities involved.

The program was dedicated to World War 2, where many artifacts from that war, as well as other major conflicts, were on display in the gymnasium for all the students to experience. These original artifacts were on loan from members of the faculty, friends and others who were able to offer something for the benefit of the student's better understanding of the war era and the sacrifices that were made to ensure Americas freedom.

The afternoon assembly session was devoted to the history of US Coast Guard and its contribution to the war effort. Mr. George Blessing spoke about his experiences while on active duty in the "Battle of Okinawa". Pictures of the ship upon which he served were presented.

The most popular part of the program followed where a story about a member of the Coast Guard, named "Sinbad", was presented. "Sinbad" was a mutt dog that was befriended by the Coast Guard members at the start of the war and served aboard ship during many conflicts. Because of the manner in which the material was presented, the attention of the entire student body was held throughout the program. At the conclusion of the "Sinbad" presentation, a few important topics on water safety were presented for the benefit of all in attendance. A question and answer period followed the program where many very thoughtful questions were offered.

Several days later, Mr. Brad Mayer was handed an envelope by the administration containing thank you notes written by the students. The following are a sampling of the wonderful and thoughtful notes that the students prepared for us after the presentation. There were a total of 26 individual notes included, all of which took a great deal of time and thought in their preparation. Regrettably only those those that reproduce the best on the web site can be included.

Thank you all for making our day as special for us as we have made yours.
